Detoxification and/or cleansing - fact or fiction ? What are the benefits, if any ? Also, what works best ?

Male, early fifites, healthy lifestyle, non-smoker, red wine in moderation, gym 5 times a week. Curious about the benefits, or lack thereof, of detox.Detoxification and/or cleansing - fact or fiction ? What are the benefits, if any ? Also, what works best ?
Yes cleansing works, but only if its a very high quality cleans. I can only trust cleanses that were developed by practicing doctors that perfected the cleanses on patients to heal from diseases. Most are developed in a lab and made with very poor quality ingredients, so I can see why most people would think that they don't work.

The only reason why most diseases have doubled and will triple in industrialized countries is because of the extremely massive amount of chemicals that were developed and put into use in this last century and in this century. There are 85,000 chemicals in use today, only 10% have been tested for human health safety. People are taking in hundreds of chemicals everyday from the air, water, pesticide smothered food, soap, cleaning products, make-up, the more chemicals the more disease. People that live in the most remote parts of the world hardly ever get sick. People like the Hunzas, who live like the ancients did and many of them living into there 110's and 120's with virtually no health problems.

To be super healthy one must live like the ancients, live relatively toxic free, drink pure water, eat organic whole foods, keep stress very low, walk for at least 30 min a day, get proper sunshine and breathe fresh air. If cleansing didn't work then how did Dr. Schulze and doctors like him cure ''with cleansing, juicing, and super nutrition'' thousands of terminally ill people that the hospitals turned away because they thought they were done for. Buy a couple of his books, read them and then make an informed decision. I can tell you this, I have not ever been sick since I started a yearly cleansing program consisting of a colon, liver and kidney cleanse, as well as a super nutrition program. If you can afford it invest in a high quality far infrared sauna, Cedrus saunas are excellent, it penetrates 4 inches deep into the skin and sweats out all toxins from the tissues cells and muscles, it also dramatically boosts the immune system. You can only make an informed decision by talking to and reading about people who have done what you are seeking.

The colon cleanse will clean out parasites, mucus, and toxic waste.

It is a good healthy thing to do for yourself.
Not only is detoxification false, you can also cause some serious health issues.

If you think about your body and what it does, you will soon realize that your body detoxes every day, it works 24/7.

Just by drinking more water, you will detox safely and will not end up with serious infections like yeast infections of the bowel (extremely painful) and in some cases you will cause bilary duct stones to lodge (often called liver stones which there is NO such thing)- which is not only painful and dangerous and then sometimes a gallstone will cause one to have emergency surgery.

many say they feel better after a cleanse, but the truth be knownst, your going to feel real bad by not eating. and worse when your only ingesting lemon and olive oil. what comes out of the intestine is lemon coated balls of olive oil.

some say they have had the stones analyzed which is fine, however, the stones one is wished to flush should be of calcified nature and will not be able to be sliced clean without severe crumbling.

the above post is correct, it is merely a placebo effect with possible dangerous outcomes. if you wish to cleanse, it is is safe to do an enema once or twice a year.

good luck.

for those that do not like my answer, please read the following:You may have seen ads claiming that colon cleansing is necessary to help prevent diseases like colon cancer.

The bottom line? It's a waste of time and money. It won't prevent colon cancer - or any other diseases for that matter. In fact, colon cleansing may even hurt you.

There are two main types of colon cleansing. The first type is a powdered or liquid supplement. The other type is colonic irrigation or colonic hydrotherapy, which involves inserting a rubber tube into the rectum and flushing it with water.

Holistic practitioners believe the colon is a sewage system and if it's not kept clean, waste products won't be cleared out and toxic substances will be absorbed into the body. They believe that the typical person may have as many as several pounds of fecal matter in their colon, which causes mucus to build up and harden on colon walls.

Science says this is not true. Your colon knows how to do its job, constantly shedding old cells, absorbing nutrients and keeping a delicate balance of bacteria and natural chemicals. Interfering with this process can hurt or destroy these relationships, meaning the colon won't work as well as it should. Colon cleansing is unnecessary, and medical doctors do not advise you to do this.

Another danger of colon cleansing is that if the equipment used to flush out your colon is not clean, you could end up with a bacterial infection.

Another possible problem is that people who get this treatment may absorb too much water. This could lead to a chemical imbalance in the body, feeling sick to your stomach, vomiting, heart failure and fluid in the lungs. There is also the risk of breaking the wall of the colon, which could kill you.

Skip the colon-cleansing supplements. As with all supplements, you won't know what you are getting. The Food and Drug Administration doesn't regulate colonics, so manufacturers can make health claims that aren't supported by solid evidence. Chances are, you're wasting your money.

Colon cancer is very common. According the National Cancer Institute, it's the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. If you want to prevent colon cancer and find it early, do it the old-fashioned way:

Get regular colon cancer screenings. Your doctor can tell you how soon by looking at your family history, age and medical history. Generally, at age 50 you should start getting screened regularly. Colon cancer needs to be caught very early, before symptoms happen.

Eat a diet rich in fiber and low in fat. Studies show that people who eat a high-fiber, low-fat diet are less likely to develop colon cancer. A diet low in vitamin D may also increase the risk.

Get regular exercise.

Don't smoke. Some evidence suggests that smoking may increase the risk of colon cancer.
Fiction. Placebo effect ONLY.

NONE of these ';detox'; programs / patches / whatever tell you what ';toxins'; they are supposedly removing. NONE have any proof that any ';toxin'; has been removed after use.

It's all BS, marketed to the gullible.
fiction; the body has its own natural detoxification system; liver, kidneys etc. detox, waste of money. keep up with your lifestyle, its something i wish i had the staying power to do, and I'm half your age!
Your lifestyle is good. I have herd natural doctors say you don't need cleanse. I have herd many say you do.

They say John Wayne died with over 40 lbs of build up in his colon. Like old pipes they buid up with age then you can't digest food efeciantly.

I personally believe it doesn't hurt to detox once a year. I have a book that has a colon clense that I think is as good as any. Drink distilled drinking water (Several glasses a day)

Drink one glass of Apple Cider (prefered organic) each day Then every couple of days add some lemon juice to your drinking water. Dont eat or drink anything else for 4 or 5 days.

This will clense stones, toxins that do build up, and fecal matter from colon. Supprising I dont get hungry during this.

Good Luck, I'm 63
Definably true - although the detox patches aren't. Eat more raw foods and your body will do the rest.
fact i use a detox system from health store plus i buy detox foot pads it works
FACT: Cleansing works and is ESSENTIAL to your health.

Let me make a suggestion...

Cleansing is great, and vital to your health, but you need to do it correctly. The purpose of a cleanse (especially if you are fighting a degenerative or chronic disease) is to detox your body AND give your body the nutrients it needs to regenerate clean, healthy cells.

Most cleanses -- like the master cleanse -- do detox your body, but do nothing for restoring balance to your system. For example, your body is building about 1 billion new cells each day. If you cleanse without flooding your body with super-absorbable nutrients, your body has to create new cells out of whatever is left over in your system after you cleanse-- which is usually mineral, vitamin, protein and fat deficient.

Instead, I would do a nutritional cleanse. These cleanses flush your entire system (colon included) of all the junk, while simultaneously flooding your cells with super nutrition. This way, when your body starts building new cells -- they are made out of the best ';parts'; available.

This will help your body regenerate parts of your body that need help (i.e., new pancreas cells if you are diabetic, new skin cells if your suffer from eczema/psoriasis, new neural cells if you suffer from emotional imbalances). Other benefits of this type of cleanse are: eliminating unhealthy cravings, weight loss, better sleep, more energy, sharp intellect and clear skin.

Of course, I am biased, and completely endorse the Isagenix product line :) Here's a video that explains the Isagenix nutritional cleanses -- it's only a few minutes long...

Sounds like you really care about your health -- keep it up and add a cleanse every once in a while to stay feeling young. Good luck!
